Nevegal - Giro d’Italia

Nevegal Giro D’Italia

Possibly less famous than the other great Dolomite stages, the peak of Nevegal with its average gradient of 8% is a fine summit to add to your cycling achievements. You can set off from the centre of the Provincial seat to reach the “Hill” the town’s inhabitants are so fond of.

The Nevegal marked a stage finish for the first time in 1962, but it was only in 2011 that it made history and became something of a legend: "El Pistolero" Alberto Contador stole the victory from top favourite Vincenzo Nibali by terminating the Cronoscalata with a 34" lead over the Sicilian.

Curiosities and tips

  • In the Gorizia-Nevegal stage of 1963 the Giro passed through Longarone just 125 days before it was swept away by the Vajont tragedy.
  • It took Contador just 28' 55" to reach the 1400 metre-high summit from the centre of Belluno
  • The Dragone Belluno-Nevegàl Granfondo has been included in the 2023 Prestigio circuit. The Prestigio Cycle touring circuit is the most important of its kind in the international Gran Fondo calendar of events and unites the most exciting and prestigious gran fondo events organized in Italy.
