Derived from the ancient Malga Durona and inaugurated on September 20, 1964, its name has reminded exiled Fiumans for forty years. The malga is identified with the type of buildings found in the Dolomite valleys, characterized by local stone at the base and wood in the upper part, including the roof. A nearly unique feature in the mentioned area is the three significant arched rooms in contemporary buildings meant exclusively for stables. It appears that Durona was used for pastoral activities (sheep) and dates back to around the year 1600, while it was already indicated on the topographic map of the Lombardo – Veneto Kingdom in the year 1833. The current volume can be traced back to 1924, the year in which numerous post-war renovations were carried out in the mountains. An additional internal transformation took place in 1964 with the change of use from Malga to Refuge and in 2005 with the recent structural and functional adaptation works that have enhanced its architectural uniqueness along with the simple and functional style of high-altitude structures.
