We are, above all, a beautiful family, deeply in love with the land where we live, who at a certain point asked what we could do to enhance the lands inherited from our ancestors here, in the valley of the Dolomites, in the province of Belluno.
From the initial idea of resuming the typical crops of our territory, seeking those abandoned because they were not productive or profitable, but with remarkable ethical and nutritional values, the desire to embark on a cultural and agricultural path to return to the cultivation of Hemp, traditionally and widely practiced until the early fifties in the Belluno area, was born.
The motivation to take on this exciting challenge came from reading an article in the monthly “Terra Nuova” about the cultivation of hemp for food purposes, highlighting all its precious virtues and benefits for humans, animals, and the environment itself. Currently, we manage about two hectares of arable land, one dedicated to Hemp sativa and the other to red flint corn, Gialét bean from the Slow Food Presidia, and red mountain potatoes. In addition, we have a modest yet precise cultivation of aromatic herbs in our home garden.
So here is Who We Are: a Family, a proud and confident cultivator of our own work, and above all, we are Custodians of the Territory and its traditions. We run a small farm, newly established but long desired.
Since 2016, we have been cultivating Hemp Sativa from certified seeds (registered in the European Seed Register, THC
Our cultivation methods are based on the principles of sustainability and agro-ecology and are aimed at conserving and increasing the biological fertility of the soil and biodiversity. We are not certified organic, but we use cultivation techniques without pesticides and agrochemicals, implementing rotations, cover crops, and false sowing for weed control. We like to promote native crops, recover seeds, ancient grains, and fruits, perhaps not very productive, but of quality and high added value, which enshrine a lot of history and experience from past generations.
Since 2019, we have been able to carry out the harvesting and threshing of hemp mechanically, through the use of a modified threshing machine for wheat, thanks to the ingenuity of a contractor from our area. We have adhered to the optional quality indication of Mountain Product since we cultivate and transform entirely in a mountain municipality. Our goal is encapsulated in the idea from which we started: to introduce into our territory a crop that does not require chemical treatments, herbicides, and which, through appropriate rotations, returns to the land its chemical, physical, and microbiological fertility of the past.
All this integrated with the use of organic amendments and surface workings of the soil without any type of chemical or forced intervention.
