Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate di Bardies, Via Bardies - 32026 Mel di Borgo Valbelluna (BL) IT

Documented since 1515, the church is located near the Rimonta stream. Originally it was supposed to be smaller and shorter, but already decorated with frescoes.

It consists of a large hall completely decorated with the events from the life of St. Anthony the Abbot depicted in 18 panels. The frescoes are attributed to Giovanni da Mel with the help of his brother Marco, painted between 1520 and 1530, and Cesare Vecellio.

The gabled façade is characterized by two large windows on either side of the entrance and an oculus on the tympanum. The bell tower is located to the left of the apse.

During World War I (1915-18), the paintings in the hall were covered with a lime wash. The frescoes were restored in 1965 and again between 2017 and 2018. In 2014, the redevelopment of the churchyard was completed, using the cobblestones from the ancient floor that emerged during the works in the square in front of the church.

The building, whose original core dates back to the early 15th century, incorporates late medieval structures that are also frescoed. From the steps behind the altar, one descends to the ancient floor level, where the "Madonna with Child," a 15th-century fresco of particular artistic value, stands out for its rich colors.
