Il mito di Tiziano nell’800 e il Monumento di Pieve di Cadore

The monument to Titian in Pieve di Cadore, created by Antonio Dal Zotto (1880), is part of the nineteenth-century elaboration of the Titian myth, which consecrates the artist as an emblem of Renaissance genius and national cultural tradition. In relation to similar celebratory devices, such as the Frari monument in Venice, it testifies to the progressive overcoming of idealizing models in favor of a more dynamic and expressive representation. In the context of the second half of the nineteenth century, monumentalization is configured as a central tool in the construction and public transmission of the myth of Titian.
Elena Catra is an art historian specialized in nineteenth-century Venetian art, with particular attention to Antonio Canova, sculpture, and academic teaching. She is the author of numerous publications, curator of exhibitions, and speaker at national and international conferences. She has also explored the fortune of Titian in the nineteenth century. She is the founder and a member of the editorial board of the online journal MDCCC 1800 of Ca’ Foscari and teaches Art History at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Among her most recent works are Antonio Canova. Itineraries in Veneto and studies dedicated to Canova and Venetian sculpture.
Vittorio Pajusco is an art historian, PhD candidate at Ca’ Foscari and IUAV, and a researcher of modern and contemporary art. His main research areas focus on the Venice Biennale, artistic exhibitions between the 19th and 20th centuries, gender studies, and the enhancement and cataloging of archives and cultural heritage. He has curated numerous exhibitions and publications, especially in the context of the Canovian celebrations from 2022-2025, including The Unseen Canova, Canovian Memories, and Antonio Canova. Itineraries in Veneto. He has also published numerous studies on Italian artists of the nineteenth century, twentieth century, and contemporary artists.
