The church overlooking the center of Agordo is a key stop on a spiritual journey that in this Jubilee year takes you in the footsteps of Blessed Pope John Paul I.
Albino Luciani was transferred right here, to the parish of Agordo, where he served as chaplain from 1935 to 1937, after a brief initial assignment as chaplain and assistant vicar in Canale d'Agordo. In Agordo, young Luciani immersed himself deeply in the life of the community: he heard confessions, taught at the Mining Institute, and above all, he understood the hardships of the miners in the nearby Valle Imperina, still active at the time. He also guided altar servers, worked with the choir, and even played the organ. A curiosity: Luciani described himself as “a chaplain always penniless,” as he lived out the poverty he had chosen with full conviction.
It can be said that the church of Agordo became the first true ‘workshop’ of his pastoral mission. It was here that he gave his final homily in Agordo on June 29, 1978, while still Patriarch of Venice, invited by Archdeacon Lino Mottes. That homily remained in the hearts of all his fellow citizens. During it, he recalled those years in Agordo as the happiest of his life.
