An intense journey into devotion and medieval literature through the interpretation of “El planto de La Verzene Maria,” a verse work composed by fra Enselmino da Montebelluna (14th century).
The work, one of the most touching testimonies of devotional poetry in the vernacular Venetian, gives voice to the universal pain of a mother in the face of her son's sacrifice, transforming the sacred drama into an intimate and profound listening experience.
The interpretation brings forth the extraordinary expressive power of the poetry and the language of the 14th century.
Occasionally, the declamation is echoed by passages sung from the Planctus Mariae preserved in contemporary manuscripts of the Cathedral of Padua and from the Laudari, signifying how central the theme was to the spiritual dimension and a subject of writing, shared between the official language of the church at the time and the speech of the people, expressing a common feeling.
The work will be interpreted by Anna Orlando, curator and reciting voice in collaboration with Elena Modena, Nicola Basso, voices, and Ilario Gregoletto, medieval instruments.
