PFAS or the birth of the Anthropocene

On Friday, October 30, at the Hangar 11 space in Belluno at 6:30 p.m., as part of the Vertigini festival organized by SlowMachine, “PFAS or the birth of the Anthropocene” will be presented. This is the outcome of the workshop “Atlas of the Banks. Chapter 2.”

Conducted by Rajeev Badhan with Marta Beldì, Giuseppe Benedet, Valeria Bernardi, Susanna Berti, Cristina Boldrin, Patrizia Boschiero, Francesca Camillo, Loredana Cecconi, Noemi Dal Col, Antonio Ferraro, Loretta Gallon, Rosalia Panziera, Giorgia Sonego, and Sonia Vazza.

The event is realized by SlowMachine in collaboration with Irecoop Veneto as part of the project “Mars - Man and new technologies for audiovisual and live performance.”

There is a geological era that scientists still cannot certify, and there is a territory that is already experiencing that era on its own skin, in its own blood.

The laboratory process aimed to tell the story of the Veneto of PFAS: “eternal” chemical substances that have reached the aquifers of hundreds of thousands of people, from the province of Vicenza to the sea of the Venetian lagoon. But the question that

the work poses is how water scarcity is connected to this environmental tragedy, which is not just about the past of a valley or a single factory, it concerns the present of those who look: here in Belluno we live today the same contradiction in a new form — summers of drought that drain once inexhaustible springs, and increasingly violent rains that instead of replenishing the aquifers, bury them under sediments and pollutants.

Scarcity and contamination are no longer two separate emergencies: they are the same crisis, two faces of the same water that we can no longer manage.

Theater becomes a tool for investigation, not a form of illustration, a tool to make a technical fact thinkable and debatable that would otherwise remain locked in reports.
