On Friday, May 7th at 8:30 p.m., the show "The Youth Condition Today" featuring Umberto Galimberti will take place at the Teatro Comunale Dino Buzzati.
There is a new disturbing guest. It is the cynicism that pervades our society and disheartens the new generations. The great philosopher and psychoanalyst positions himself as their listener and offers adults a fundamental tool for understanding.
“To the passive nihilism of resignation, not a few young people replace the active nihilism of those who, taking their cue from that desolate scenario, and not from comforting hopes or useless expectations, invent their own future.”
Every parent wonders who their child is, what they desire, what their world is like. But often understanding is complicated, and being helpful in difficulties is even more so. Umberto Galimberti knows that in the era of Facebook and Instagram, the reality that matters is the virtual one, time is accelerated and the competition to carve out a role in society is very strong: “Those who do not run and do not win in this race of speed are not in the world. In that virtual world which is now more real than the so-called ‘real’ world.” And how do young people react to this pressure? The haste that every twenty-year-old has to realize their dreams risks degenerating into a form of cynicism completely unknown to their parents' generation. Girls and boys rely on indifference and control of feelings and emotions to prevent passions from becoming an obstacle to self-assertion. These young people, then, need to be listened to and need answers. To not lose sight of the precious gift of the time of life, a time to chase one's dreams and also to allow oneself the luxury of making the mistakes that foster growth. Galimberti engages in dialogue with each one and explores the sufferings, doubts, anxieties, and desires of a generation. He listens to the words, ideas, and aspirations. And he offers every parent a tool to question themselves about their children, to understand the depth of their questions, and to prevent all hopes from turning into disappointments.
