Enrica Folin - Da Venezia al Cadore. Il Purgatorio nell’arte figurativa

The meeting aims to analyze what can be defined as the "phenomenon" of Purgatory, as it investigates, in a multidisciplinary manner, its manifestations in social life, literature, music, painting, and applied arts, with particular reference to works produced in Venice and especially in the territories of the province of Belluno, during the years from the Council of Trent to the fall of the Serenissima. Particular attention will be given to the iconographic themes of the Good Death and the Souls in Purgatory, themes depicted in the works found in the church of Madonna della Difesa in Vigo di Cadore, namely The Good Death with the parish priests Giovanni Maria and Tiberio Pilotti and The Salvation of the Souls in Purgatory with archangels and the parish priest Tiberio Pilotti, as well as in the altarpieces painted by Antonio Lazzarini in the church of San Martino in Valle di Cadore depicting the Crucifixion and the Death of Saint Joseph.

ENRICA FOLIN, independent researcher, earned her master's degree in History of Art and Conservation of Artistic Heritage at Ca' Foscari University of Venice with a thesis on the iconography of Purgatory in Venice, supervised by Professor Augusto Gentili. She is the author of the volumes The Serenissimo Purgatory. Literature, Society and Art published by Marcianum Press (2018), Garden of Conversations. Writings in honor of Augusto Gentili edited by C. Barbieri, M. Di Monte, H. Economopoulos, B. Paul, L. Pavanello, V. Sapienza, and M. G. Sarti published by Bardi ed. (2023), and The Church of Santa Croce degli Armeni in Venice forthcoming. The results of her iconological research on works and pictorial cycles executed in Venice, and beyond, from the 16th to the 18th centuries have been reported in various essays published in Venezia Cinquecento, ARTEꞁDocumentoꞁ, Ateneo Veneto, in national seminars and international conferences. She teaches at the Itinerarte Studium research center. She also collaborates with the Association of Friends of Museums and Monuments of Venice, the Association Fondamenta delle Convertite, Venice Design Week.
