Cadore - Tre Cime - Comelico
Conferenza di Nina Kudiš su Alvise Gozzi e la pala di Tiziano

Much has been written about the famous Pala Gozzi, or rather Gozze, including in the recent catalog of the exhibition in Pieve di Cadore.

Over the decades, numerous and authoritative art historians have analyzed the style, iconography, historical, cultural, and artistic context of the creation of the work within the framework of Titian's production and Venetian painting in the early quarter of the 16th century.

However, the figure of the commissioner, Alvise Gozze, or Lujo Gučetić, a nobleman and merchant from Ragusa settled in Ancona, despite being depicted in the altarpiece with a portrait of great expressive intensity, has remained in the background compared to the historical-artistic analyses of Titian's masterpiece.

This conference aims to delve into the reasons for his stay in Ancona, the motivations that led him to commission the altarpiece from Titian, and more generally, his personality in the context of commercial relations between Ragusa and Ancona, as well as the history and importance of his family in the Republic of Ragusa.

Additionally, the customs and practices of the Ragusan society, the role of the aristocracy in the Republic of Ragusa in relation to that of Venice will be examined.

Finally, all these elements will contribute to a better understanding of every aspect of the extraordinary and highly evocative portrait of Alvise Gozzi created by Titian and will allow for an innovative reading of the work's iconography.
