Valmorel's Woodcarving Tradition

Valmorel, a small village in the Belluno Prealps, celebrates its identity through art and culture.

In 2006, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Dino Buzzati, the local group “I Bacalenc” created the bas-reliefs I Miracoli di Val Morel, works inspired by Buzzati's ex-votos. The first sculptures, displayed on the facade of the Dairy, enriched the village and subsequently the surrounding woods with over fifty works of both real and fantastic figures.

The installations are organized into thematic paths: towards Malga Van legendary figures appear, towards Malga Montegal ancient trades are revived, and at Malga Canal del Gat fairy tales come to life. At the four corners of the square, four statues reflect the surrounding context: a schoolboy with a backpack on the side of the Guesthouse in Scole, a cheesemaker with his tools in front of the Dairy, a woman with a child facing the church, and a man with a bottle and glass oriented towards the Inn.

At the gates of Valmorel, arriving from Valpiana, there is also a viewpoint characterized by a group of wooden statues reminiscent of the famous Moai of Easter Island.

Among the most original works are the sculptures from Laste by Luciano Roncada, made with wood recovered from trees felled by the Vaja storm in 2019, including a wolf, a sword, and an alien, a humorous nod to a local rumor about a supposed UFO landing.

The ideal starting point to explore this heritage is the Piazza di Valmorel, where a wooden bulletin board indicates the paths, guiding residents and visitors through art and nature.
