The wealth of the Left Piave area in Belluno is not only environmental or social. There are also significant historical and cultural riches. One of these is represented by the Piave Museum “Vincenzo Colognese” in Caorera, a very active small district of the Municipality of Vas.
It is a facility founded by Don Antonio Pavan and Vincenzo Colognese, which aims to keep alive the memory of the events of the First World War, a conflict that here, at the foot of the Grappa, saw painful chapters between 1917 and 1918.
All the exhibited pieces are original, gathered over many years of passionate research.
Significant are the twinning initiatives: with the Museum of Caporetto-Kobarid and the Museum of Military History in Budapest.
In 2005, the new hall of about 300 square meters was inaugurated by Arci Duke Georg d'Asburgo (grandson of Emperor Charles I of Austria), featuring extraordinary exhibits such as the original Austrian and Hungarian flags, a photographic exhibition with geographical maps of the Honved, an Austro-Hungarian pontoon boat that emerged from the sands of the Piave a few years ago at Ponte di Piave, unique artifacts including swords, rifles, machine guns, and pistols, an exhibition of 300 model aircraft, and the scale model of the Red Baron’s aircraft and the SPAD XIII of Francesco Baracca
This is a faithful reconstruction of the aircraft of the ace of the Italian aviation that is fully functional and capable of flying. It is worth noting that this is the first replica of an Italian airplane from the Great War to fly. A heartfelt thanks to the current President of the Piave Museum, Diotisalvi Perin, who conceived this realization of the SPAD XIII of the ace of aces Major Francesco Baracca.
