Starting from the parking lot of the Lunelli refuge, the ascent to Monte Colesei develops along a comfortable military road. The second part of the climb, outside the vegetation, is a continuous alternation of landscapes as one tackles the hairpin bends: from the looming Dolomite walls of Monte Popera and Cima Undici to the west, to the Valle del Comelico to the south, from Monte Spina on the other side of the valley to Monte Elmo and the Valle di Sesto. Upon completing the ascent, a short downhill stretch leads to Forcella Pian della Biscia, located a few meters below the summit of Monte Colesei. From the Forcella, it is possible to continue climbing for a few meters until reaching impressive military fortifications of the Vallo Littorio dating back to World War II, carved into the vertical wall of Croda Sora i Colesei.
Difficulty: medium.
