PFAS ovvero la nascita dell'antropocene

On Sunday, September 27, at Hangar 11 in Belluno at 6:30 p.m., as part of the Vertigini festival organized by SlowMachine, “PFAS or the Birth of the Anthropocene” will be presented. This is the outcome of the workshop “Atlas of the Shores. Chapter 2” conducted by Rajeev Badhan with Marta Beldì, Giuseppe Benedet, Valeria Bernardi, Susanna Berti, Cristina Boldrin, Patrizia Boschiero, Francesca Camillo, Loredana Cecconi, Noemi Dal Col, Antonio Ferraro, Loretta Gallon, Rosalia Panziera, Giorgia Sonego, Sonia Vazza.
Following this, Dr. Lorenzo Altissimo will speak, who has been a laboratory assistant since 1974 at the former Provincial Laboratory of Hygiene and Health Prevention of Vicenza (now the Departmental Laboratory of ARPAV). Since 1980, he has been responsible for the Water Analysis Laboratory AIM (Vicenza)-AMAG (Padova) and has been the Director of the Novoledo Water Center srl since 1998.

There is a geological era that scientists have yet to certify, and there is a territory that is already experiencing that era on its own skin, in its own blood. The laboratory path aimed to tell the story of the PFAS in Veneto: “eternal” chemical substances that have reached the aquifers of hundreds of thousands of people, from the province of Vicenza to the sea of the Venice lagoon. But the question raised by the work is how water scarcity is linked to this environmental tragedy, which concerns not just the past of a valley or a single factory, but the present of those looking on: here in Belluno, we are experiencing the same contradiction in a new form — summers of drought that drain once-unfailing springs, and increasingly violent rains that instead of recharging the aquifers flood them with sediments and pollutants.
Scarcity and contamination are no longer two separate emergencies: they are the same crisis, two sides of the same water that we can no longer manage.

The theater becomes a tool for investigation, not a form of illustration, a means to make thinkable and debatable a technical fact that would otherwise remain locked away in reports.
