Discover moreLife on the Glaciers! - Conference
Glaciers, in retreat, are the sad icon of the ongoing climate changes.
At the same time, they play an extremely valuable bio-cultural role.
Regarded for centuries as extreme environments, characterized only by the presence of ice and rocky debris, recent scientific research has demonstrated that a peculiar biodiversity is safeguarded on and within their surface.
During the evening, we will learn about, through examples also taken from the glaciers of the Dolomites - including those of Sorapìs - which organisms live on the glaciers, what types of adaptations they possess, and what their fate is.
We will also explore what happens, from a biological and ecological perspective, when a glacier retreats.
Speakers:
Mauro Gobbi - researcher at MUSE-Museum of Sciences in Trento
Michele Da Pozzo - director of the Natural Park of the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo
Mauro Gobbi: holds a PhD in Natural and Environmental Sciences and works as a researcher at MUSE-Museum of Sciences in Trento. For twenty years he has been studying the biodiversity present in glacial environments both Alpine and extra-Alpine. He has conducted expeditions in the major mountain ranges of the Alps, the Andes, the Pyrenees, Scandinavia, and Greenland.
