Never since 1945 has Europe felt so trapped by the end of Atlanticism, decreed by the American president, and by the growing Russian aggression in Eastern Europe, in the substantial indifference of the United States; while the war in Ukraine continues. Bruno Vespa narrates the transition from one "cataclysm" to another.
From History, captured in the days of the conclusion of World War II, with the violent and almost simultaneous deaths of Hitler and Mussolini, to the upheaval of the global order caused by Donald Trump. Exercising economic, diplomatic, and military supremacy with brutality, Trump imposed a truce in Gaza after two years of massacres committed by Israel in response to the horrific slaughter on October 7, 2023, at the hands of Hamas terrorists.
All of this has had inevitable repercussions on Italian politics. Giorgia Meloni celebrated the third year of her government (the third longest in the Republic) while remaining anchored to the Europeanist tradition, though acting as a privileged interlocutor with Trump. Her support guarantees the executive a remarkably unique stability in Europe, and her two main partners, Tajani and Salvini, despite strong differences in views, never approach a break.
And all the others? What is the fate of the PD led by Elly Schlein, and of the alliance with Conte's M5S? How will the referendum on the separation of the careers of the magistrates go, the true starting point of the 2027 election campaign?
And returning to foreign policy: is it true, as Guido Crosetto tells Vespa, that Ukraine's defeat would virtually bring Europe into war with Russia?
Bruno Vespa (L'Aquila, 1944) started working as a journalist at the age of 16. Graduating in Law with a thesis on the right to report, he won a competition to join Rai and directed Tg1 from 1990 to 1993. Since 1996, his show "Porta a porta" has been the most followed program on politics, current events, and culture. Among his latest books, Italiani voltagabbana, Donne d’Italia, C’eravamo tanto amati, Soli al comando, Rivoluzione, Perché l’Italia diventò fascista, Perché l’Italia amò Mussolini, Perché Mussolini rovinò l’Italia (e come Draghi la sta risanando), La grande tempesta, Il rancore e la speranza, Hitler e Mussolini, with Mondadori.
