Krampus parade in Arabba

In Arabba, the Krampus Parade returns, ancient and eerie figures that have animated Advent celebrations for centuries. The parade will start at 6:00 PM from via Freine, then cross the town center. The procession will reach the Showplatz, in the center near the fountain, and will conclude in the parking lot near the road worker's house, where the participating groups will offer one final spectacular display.

An ancient tradition

The Krampus have origins that predate Christianity and harken back to Alpine rituals of the winter solstice, when communities celebrated the transition to the darkest season of the year through masked figures that embodied wild spirits. Over time, this tradition has been integrated into the cult of Saint Nicholas, the protector of children, who according to custom visits the little ones on December 5 accompanied by little angels. When Saint Nicholas departs, the Krampus, restless and untamed spirits, remain to wander among the villages, reminding everyone of the thin line between order and chaos, between good and evil.

The stars of the parade

The Krampus stand out with their impressive appearance: intricately carved wooden masks, often with demonic faces; large furs and tattered clothing; bells and metallic chains that resonate with each step. Their presence is both terrifying and fascinating: a powerful call to primordial nature and community rituals that have endured through the ages.

• The name Krampus may derive from the German Kramp (“claw”) or from Bavarian Krampn (“dead”).
• In some Alpine areas, they are also called Teufel, “devils,” emphasizing their role as admonishers.
