Synopsis: Guido Contin, known as Cognac, lives in a disused railway cottage nestled among the woods of Cadore with his wife, his cat. He is elderly and owns nothing but a folder full of letters addressed to the mountain peaks and returned to sender. These are handwritten pages from a man who signs himself as Onesto, recounting his life with his twin brother Santo, his encounter with Celeste, war, death, and love.

The stories seem simple, of people who accept fate without questioning it, clinging to life like larches on the steepest slopes. Yet they reveal extraordinary events: a kidnapping, a lost son found, a terrible violence, a bomb falling in the night, a photograph hidden among the rocks, a secret full of shame, and above all, an unconfessable love that flows through life like a raging torrent.

In his simplicity, Onesto reveals something universal: “Many believe that climbing requires strength, but it is quite the opposite. Climbing, like living, is not about holding on; it is about letting go. Everything. The fear, the uncertainty, the problems, the solutions, the past, the future, the grips, the supports. Everything.

Letting go in a continuous movement that brings one closer to the sky.” Francesco Vidotto is a storyteller capable of going straight to the heart of things. With the story of Onesto, Santo, and Celeste, he moves us, touches us, and guides us upwards, where the air is thin and we feel intimately renewed, able to look at life with new eyes.
