The hike unfolds in an interesting pastoral environment on the Grappa Massif, a name that has entered history for being the site of fierce and bloody battles between the Italian front and the Austrian front during the Great War. Starting from the Bocchette Refuge, one enters the Woods of Heroes, a thematic path that intertwines history, art, and nature. The itinerary was created in 2014 to commemorate the many lives lost on the battlefield, the reflections and fears of simple soldiers.
Every single glimpse provokes emotions and reflections: the stones covered with moss, the trenches hidden in the woods, and the artworks distributed along the path, wooden sculptures made by local artists who donate their pieces each year to enrich the cultural heritage of these fascinating places. The wounds of the Woods of Heroes do not belong only to the past but also testify to the more modern scars left by the wind of Vaia.
This intense journey teaches, however, that life returns: one can indeed observe young and courageous plants that give new life to these places.
Today we can get a taste of the alpine life of farming families in the Bocchette basin thanks to the tasting of typical mountain cheeses produced at altitude: the Morlacco and the Bastardo.
