The review Mondovisioni: the documentaries of “Internazionale” tells the complexity of our time through exemplary and unfiltered stories that engage us and relate to us.
It is inevitable to continue addressing Gaza with The Life That Remains, the directorial debut of Arab cinema superstar Dorra Zarrouk, who opens an unprecedented window into the life that existed and persists in the Strip through the memories and images of a Palestinian family in exile.
THE PLOT
The story of a Palestinian family, consisting of parents and eight children, who fled from Gaza to Egypt three months after the start of the war on October 7, 2023. Among them is Nadine, a young mother of twin girls born finally after years of failed attempts. The family must confront the loss of their home, their belongings, and their loved ones who remained in Gaza, a place they loved and considered their world, crowded yet welcoming. Now, as refugees in Egypt, they dream of returning, but the destruction of Gaza casts a shadow over their future, evoking the tragedy of a second Nakba. Symbolically carrying the key to their destroyed home, they face the memory and nostalgia of a place they may never see again. Through their moving testimonies and images of both their exile and life in Gaza before and during the war, the film immortalizes their experience, including Nadine's secret visit to Jerusalem to give birth to her twins in a hospital equipped for such a delicate procedure, and the family's escape through the Rafah crossing.
