This year, the Siorpaes family from the Averau Refuge kicks off the winter season with... the devils!
On Sunday, December 14, from around 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the magical, folkloric, and unsettling Krampus (devils), ancient traditional figures from the Ladin and Tyrolean cultures, will parade around the Averau Refuge. However, these are not true devils, but frightening figures with horns and sharp teeth who wave whips, chains, and pitchforks, spreading fear and anxiety, dating back to pre-Christian times.
The story goes that while Saint Nicholas rewarded well-behaved children with gifts, the Krampus wandered in search of naughty kids. These monsters, half goat and half demon, are ugly and terrifying figures. They wear furs, have their faces covered by wooden masks with horns, and make a lot of noise with their bells and chains.
Over time, this tradition has transformed into an attraction for visitors of all ages. Attending the parades is a great opportunity to observe up close this ancient and mysterious tradition that has always been part of the local folklore.
The event is organized in collaboration with Hydentaler Krampus and Anpezo Teufel of Cortina d’Ampezzo, who joined together in 2022 to become the "Anpezo Teufel." Only recently have they resumed using the traditional and frightening carved wooden masks, which are true sculptures often crafted by local artists.
A unique opportunity to see this ancient and dark tradition live, and traditions must be respected.
Thrills and fun guaranteed for both young and old!
